Fifth Vote

Salt Lake City, Monday, February 11, 2002, 11:30 pm. Winter Games. Two hours ago, in the figure skating pairs final, the Ukrainian pair botched a jump and two landings and still took the gold, by 5 votes to 4.
The Canadians Maude Tessier and Rémi Gagné skated without a single error and took the silver. The arena booed for ten minutes. The deciding vote was cast by Judge No. 4, the Austrian Gerlinde Moser.
The referee of the event filed a formal complaint and called the police to the meeting room of the judges' hotel: if anyone traded that vote, the medal was stolen. Last night and tonight, the Ukrainians' coach spent the evening at this hotel's bar.
Three people know what happened in this hotel in the early hours after the final. One of them decided the gold before the pair ever stepped onto the ice.
