Chicago, an August Friday in 2015, 11 pm. In the ballroom of a lakeside hotel, the bridge tables are still cut in half by wooden screens, with the trays resting underneath.

At 10:10 pm the quarterfinal of the national team tournament ended, with a $200,000 prize from the sponsor. The team of Dutchman Maurits Kuyper lost by 1 IMPIMP International Match Points: the scoring unit used in team bridge matches., after an appeal on board 23 was rejected in four minutes.

Kuyper swears the winning pair cheated all day. The federation froze the prize and called the police: if there was fraud, someone stole this victory.

Three people spent the day around table 1. One of them knows what the board said before the first card.
