Paris, August 1911. A great museum in the city, Tuesday, 9:00 am. Only four iron hooks are left on the wall of the Square Room: the portrait of the Lady with the Smile, the most famous work in the house, is gone.
The painting was last seen on Monday, the day the museum closes to the public and only staff and construction workers come in. No one raised the alarm until this morning: everyone assumed it was with the photographer.
The portrait is an oil painting on wood, 77 by 53 centimeters, protected since last year by a glass case. The frame has not turned up.
Three people were near the room on Monday. One of them knows where the smile went.
The museum guards' room, of stone. Through the half-open door, the empty wall of the Salon Carré.
