Salisbury, a Sunday in March, 6 pm. At 4:15 pm, a 66-year-old man and his 33-year-old daughter were found unconscious on a bench in the town square, eyes open, unresponsive. They are in a coma.
Grigor Danek was a colonel in his country's military intelligence, sold secrets to the British and ended up traded in a spy swap. He had lived here for eight years, growing roses.
At 5 pm, Sergeant Wynn went to Danek's house, touched the door handle and half an hour later fell ill too. The snow stopped the trains, and the police held the station.
Three people crossed Danek's Sunday. One of them came a long way just to touch that handle before he did.
A square in an English town at dusk, with dirty snow and a bench cordoned off by police tape.
