Little Brindle, a village in the Cotswolds, England, Sunday, 6:10 am. Lady Penelope Fairley's gardener found the Black Rose, the rosebush she spent twelve years crossbreeding, cut down to the ground.
The soil in the bed was white with rock salt. The rosebush was destroyed between 11:00 pm and midnight, just hours before the Garden Contest judging, set for 10:00 am.
The Black Rose was the favorite for the trophy. Three people were near the garden that night, and one of them went home with salted soil on their boots.
The vestry of Little Brindle church, oak pews, a smell of wax and cold tea.
