The Blue Canary, a speakeasy behind a barbershop on Clark Street, Chicago, 1927. 1:20 am. Frankie Doyle, the owner, was found dead in the cellar, next to the open safe.
A single shot, around 1:10 am. Nobody heard it: the band was playing its instrumental number, trumpet at full volume. The money in the safe was still there.
The barbershop door was locked and the doorman swears no one left. Three people had access to the cellar hallway. One of them went down those stairs.
The empty floor of the Blue Canary, chairs up on the tables, cigar smoke hanging still under the lamps.
