Amsterdam, Monday, November 28, 1983, 11:30 pm. Nineteen days ago, at 6:56 pm on a Wednesday, the brewer Ewout Brakel and his driver, Gijs Lammerts, were dragged out of their car in front of the brewery headquarters, beside a canal in the city centre.

Today, at 9 pm, the family paid the ransom: 32 million guildersguilders The former currency of the Netherlands, used until the euro replaced it in 2002., thrown from an overpass on the Utrecht highway. The kidnappers promised to release the two men within two hours. They didn't.

At 10:40 pm, an anonymous phone tip gave three names. All three are at the police station, and the November night outside is freezing.

Somewhere in this city, two men are waiting in chains. One of these three knows where.
