Regional treasury of Banco da União, downtown Fortaleza, a Monday in August, 8 am. The guard opened the vault gate with the treasurer and found the shelves empty.
About one hundred and sixty million reais in used notes, set aside for collection, are gone. Used notes carry no sequential numbers: nobody can trace them one by one.
The vault door was locked, the safe's clock untouched, no alarm went off. The thief did not come in through the door.
Three people know this block well. One of them spent the weekend taking money out of the bank from underneath the street.
