Treasury room of a castle in Dresden, Monday, 4:56 am. Two hooded men climbed in through a barred window in the west wing, smashed a display case with an axe and left with 21 jewels from the 18th century.

More than four thousand diamonds, gone in a few minutes. The monitoring center watched it all on the screen and, as protocol demands, called the police without confronting anyone. By the time the patrol car arrived, the room was empty.

Six minutes earlier, the street outside the castle had gone dark. The window grille, which should have held out against a whole night of sawing, gave way in seconds.

Three people know that window up close. One of them prepared the way days before.
