Coober Pedy, South Australian desert, 10:10 pm. Gus Nowak, 61, an opal miner, was found dead at the bottom of the tunnel in his own claim, twenty metres underground.
A section of the roof caved in on him between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm. It looked like an accident: an old pine prop, crumbling sandstone. But the fallen prop bears the mark of a blow.
In this town almost everyone lives underground because of the heat. Three people had business with Gus that night. One of them is lying about where they were.
The back room of the underground bar, pink sandstone walls, a ceiling fan turning slowly.
