Riad Dar Lalla Zineb, Marrakech medina, 5:40 am. At the first call to prayer, Othmane Alaoui, the owner of the riad, found the salon wall empty: the Sultan's Carpet, a 17th-century Saadian piece, was gone.

The carpet was in place at midnight, when Othmane turned off the salon lights. The street door stayed locked all night, and the key slept in his pocket.

Three people dined under this roof last night and knew what that carpet was worth. One of them took it off the wall.

The riad's courtyard, a zellige tile fountain, orange trees in pots, mint tea cooling in the glasses.
