Beirut, Tuesday, January 22, 1963, 11 pm. In the bar of a seaside hotel, foreign correspondents drink gin and watch the lights of the harbor. A lit-up Soviet freighter waits for the tide.
On Saturday, Syrian police arrested two informants of the British embassy in Damascus, a schoolteacher and a telegraph operator. Their names and addresses were only on a list typed on January 14.
The embassy's chief of station, Quentin Harcourt, called the police. Tomorrow at 6 am the freighter leaves port, and whoever sold the list may be on board.
Three people came close to that list. One of them knows where the two men from Damascus are, and does not want to know.
