The murder of reporter Don Bolles
Phoenix, United States, 1976
This case is a work of fiction. The characters, names, places and events in the game do not portray real people. The account below is a factual summary, based on public sources, of the case that served as inspiration.
Don Bolles was an investigative reporter for the Arizona Republic who covered land fraud and organized crime. On 2 June 1976, a bomb exploded under his car in the parking lot of a Phoenix hotel, where he had gone to meet a source who never showed up. He died eleven days later.
The man who planted the bomb confessed and named who had hired him; two men accused of ordering the killing were tried over the course of two decades. In response to the crime, dozens of journalists from across the country went to Arizona to finish Bolles's reporting, in what became known as the Arizona Project.
