Rotterdam, Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 8 am. A large exhibition gallery beside a museum park is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the show “Avant-Gardes”. At 3:02 am the motion sensor in the west wing went off.
The patrol car arrived at 3:07 am and found the emergency door pushed to and seven empty hooks on the wall. Seven modern paintings, lent by a foundation of collectors and valued at 90 million euros, were gone.
The emergency door did not trip the alarm. Nobody watches the building from the inside at night: only the cameras and the control room of a security firm.
Three people knew the panel, the key or the hooks of this wing. One of them knows where the paintings are.
