Owusu kente workshop, Kumasi, Ghana, 9:40 pm. The cloth commissioned by Manhyia Palace for Sunday's festival has vanished from the chest in the finishing room.

Three months on the loom, hand-dyed golden silk, a pattern only the king may wear. At 8:30 pm it was folded in the chest. At 9:40 pm, the chest was empty.

Delivery to the palace was set for tomorrow at 8 am. Three people knew the cloth up close, and one of them came back to the workshop when they shouldn't have.

The workshop's front room, wooden looms standing still, colorful skeins on the shelves, a ceiling fan turning slowly.
