The junk Ngoc Long, anchored in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, 9:40 pm. Margaret Lowe, an Australian collector, came back from dinner on deck and found the velvet box of the Black Pearl empty. The pearl is a rare Tahitian gem.
The safe in cabin 3 had been broken since departure, so the box sat on the table. The pearl was still there at 9:05 pm. It was gone before 9:40 pm.
The boat spends the night among the limestone islands, and the launch only returns at dawn. No one went ashore. Three people were away from the dinner table at the time of the theft.
