Rathore Palace, Jaipur, second night of a three-day wedding, 11:50 pm. The jewels of the bride, Meera Rathore, have vanished from the chest in the bridal room: her grandmother's kundan necklace and the emerald earrings.
The theft happened between 11:10 pm and 11:45 pm, during the sangeet, the night of music and dancing on the lawn. The chest was opened with a key, not forced.
The palace gates have been closed since 10:00 pm and no one has left. Tomorrow, Meera was to walk the seven rounds around the sacred fire wearing those jewels.
Three people had motive, access or both. One of them is lying about where they spent that half hour.
The palace council hall, pink stone lattice windows, the sangeet music still playing outside.
