Palazzo Morosin, on the Grand Canal, Venice, 11:45 pm. In the middle of the masked ball, Countess Ottavia Morosin found the music room ceiling empty: the Chandelier of Roses, Murano glass from 1742, was gone.
The chandelier comes apart in pieces, and it was taken during the fireworks, between 11:10 pm and 11:40 pm, while the guests watched the canal from the balcony. The chain was left hanging, and the water gate on the ground floor was unlocked.
No one left through the street door carrying anything without passing the butler. Three people knew the chandelier up close, and one of them was not where they claim.
Empty ballroom, masks abandoned on the gilded chairs, candles nearly burned out.
