The real case
The killings of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira
Javari Valley, Amazonas, Brazil, June 2022
This case is a work of fiction. The characters, names, places and events in the game do not portray real people. The account below is a factual summary, based on public sources, of the case that served as inspiration.
On 5 June 2022, British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian Indigenous affairs expert Bruno Pereira disappeared on the Itaquaí River, in the Javari Valley in Amazonas state, while documenting illegal fishing on Indigenous lands. Their bodies were found ten days later. A local fisherman confessed and two others were charged; the trial is examining who ordered the killings and who carried them out.
In the Pantanal, the practice of luring jaguars with bait so tourists can photograph them, known as ceva, is prohibited by law and fought by environmental agencies, but guides and biologists continue to report it.
The game borrows the figure of someone killed in the forest for having witnessed an environmental crime and intending to report it. Characters, setting, crime and outcome are fiction and do not portray the real people.
