Rimal Camp, in the Wahiba Sands, Oman, 4:50 am. Barq, Hamad Al Rawahi's champion camel, was found lying in the pen, trembling, unable to stand.
The vet arrived from Sur at 5:30 am: a needle mark on the neck and signs of xylazine, a camel tranquilizer. The dose was given between midnight and 1:00 am. The race is at 7:00 am, and Barq will not run.
The camp is isolated in the sand, and no one arrived or left during the night. Three people had a reason to be near that pen. One of them held the syringe.
The camp's majlis tent, red rugs, a pot of cardamom coffee, the sand still blue before sunrise.
