Karoo Blue Mine, outskirts of Kimberley, South Africa, 4:40 pm. The Heart of the Cape, a 212-carat rough diamond found yesterday, has vanished from the tray of the glass safe in the sorting room.
The stone was last seen at 4:10 pm. Between 4:14 pm and 4:26 pm, power to the sorting wing went down, and with it the cameras and the door locks.
No one has left the perimeter since: the gates close on their own and the exit X-ray did not beep. The stone is still in the mine.
Three people had a badge for that room. One of them is lying.
The security room at the mine's surface, a window onto the bluish pit, fine dust on the sill.
