Golden Lotus Club, French Concession, Shanghai, 1936, 12:20 am. Lin Yue, the most famous singer in the city, died in her own dressing room before the second number of the night.
She collapsed at 11:40 pm, right after drinking her intermission chrysanthemum tea. The doctor arrived at midnight and spoke of poisoning.
During the intermission, from 11:00 pm to 11:30 pm, only three people moved around backstage. One of them carried death into that cup.
The club owner's office, velvet curtains, the jazz silent downstairs and the rain beating on the window.
