Alpine Express, luxury sleeping car, 6:10 am. Countess Irene Vasiliev woke up to find the case of the Vasiliev necklace empty, an 1890 piece she was taking to auction in Vienna.
She put the necklace away at 11 pm and took her sleeping drops. At 12:40 am the train entered the Simplon tunnel: twenty minutes with the corridor in darkness.
The train did not stop all night, so the necklace is still on board. Three people had access to the countess's car.
